As simple as it sounds, backing up data is as important as ever, whether on a small or large scale, our lives are being digitalised more and more each day. Loss of a single file is a setback to most people, but losing multiple bits of data can result in catastrophic results for businesses today.
What Does It Mean to Back-Up Data?
Backing-up data, as you probably understand by now, is any act of physically making a copy of any file or peice of data, be it a single spreadsheet or a whole department or bureau’s records. Making one or more duplicates of data means that, should one go missing, there’s always the second or third version free.
What Sort of Data Can Be Backed Up?
While we all know that we’re constantly being prompted to back-up our music, photos and personal files on our laptops and smartphones, it seems as though the message just isn’t as clear when talking about large-scale business back-ups. In business, it is not neccessarily the file that poses the danger, but the implications of it. If you were to lose your favourite Beatles song, you’d be sad that you’d lost the file, but probably nothing more than that. If you were to lose records of your customer’s address or date-of-birth, then you would lose the records, but you would also suffer many other consequences of the data loss, such as: inability to contact a customer, inability to know whether that customer ever existed, damage of other files or records that relied on the existance of that customer, and other endless threatening issues and corruptions.
In short, any type of data can be backed-up, and when these precautions are taken it is easier to avoid loss and damage to your business.
Where Can I Back-Up Data?
Data can be backed-up locally or remotely, although common sense says that remotely is far more effective and superior to backing-up locally. For a safe approach, back-up multiple times, the only thing standing in the way of you backing-up your data locally and remotely in a number of places, is the amount of storage you have available.
