The growing need for Software Defined Perimeters

As enterprises adopt digital transformation and cloud services, the traditional security boundaries (and security thinking) that once protected the enterprise data and applications within the data centre are no longer able to meet the enterprise needs - not today, never mind the needs of tomorrow.

Traditional security solutions with firewalls, VPNs, NACs and Authentication provided security in a traditional fixed boundary/physical location, protecting the data and applications.  This worked, but was often complex, static and non-centralised and rarely updated so it was easily exploited, typically providing excessive network access once a user was connected to the network.

With the explosion of the Internet of Things (IoT) more and more devices are now accessing the network and require correspondingly diverse security settings.  Users often connect to the network with multiple devices requiring a technology-agnostic approach to unified security.

Time for a change

Traditional security thinking, devices and processes must now expand beyond the physical data centre and encompass the users - and their smart devices - all the way back to the applications, workloads and hybrid cloud platforms.  Physical security boundaries have now dissolved with this new digital workspace and the perimeter-less world it has created.

Software Defined Perimeter (SDP) is a new approach to IT security which expands beyond the physical perimeter and focuses on the user, providing an “authenticate first” and “least privilege” access to the network.

Software Defined WAN (SD-WAN) is a technology that can help with the adoption of SDP as well as fully complement the end-to-end requirements and the real-time analysis and analytics that is required for a full SDP deployment.

SD-WAN provides the networking backbone of the SDP solution with the centralised control, real time analytics, packet and application visibility which can work in conjunction with the SDP solution to provide the perimeter-less security network that the enterprise needs.

Where to start?

We are seeing an increasing number of customers who are seeking to address these challenges and evaluate solutions.  If you might be one of those organisations, why not register for our forthcoming customer event at Media City to find out more about SD-WAN and discuss your requirements with our engineers over lunch.  We will have experts on hand to run and Q&A session or arrange a follow-up meeting for you.
