In our first industry news blog of 2021, we’re bringing you another byte of AWS news as they announce that Twitter has signed a multi-year deal with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The social media giant will leverage AWS’s infrastructure to deliver millions of tweets a day, in an effort to scale its service in 2021. The collaboration marks the first time that Twitter is using the public cloud to scale their real-time service, and given their 330 million monthly active users, this is most certainly a major win for Amazon’s cloud arm.
The two companies have worked together for over a decade, throughout which AWS has provided Twitter with storage, compute, database and content delivery services to support its distribution of images, videos and ad content and more. However, Twitter has previously supported its main feed from wholesale data centres.
Twitter and AWS will create an infrastructure that will enable them to run and scale the real-time service globally, increase reliability and move new features into production more quickly around the world.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer said:
“This expansion onto AWS marks the first time that Twitter is leveraging the public cloud to scale their real-time service. Twitter will rely on the breadth and depth of AWS, including capabilities in compute, containers, storage and security, to reliably deliver the real-time service with the lowest latency, while continuing to develop and deploy new features to improve how people use Twitter.”
“In addition to helping us scale our infrastructure, this work with AWS enables us to ship features faster as we apply AWS’s diverse and growing portfolio of services,” Agrawal added.
Moving to the AWS public cloud puts Twitter's services closer to its end users, which ensures better customer experience. Coupled with this, AWS' public cloud also allows Twitter to scale up or scale down its server capacity as required.
